reckon one of the most neglected area of basic Judo is footwork. wherever you go to training listen out to the noise that comes from your feet.
Can you hear stomping?
Or can you hear a light swish and swoosh as your feet stay constantly connected to the mat?? If you are constantly connected to the mat then you are more likely to be ‘on balance’ which is great for when you want to launch an attack OR evade your opponents attacks.
Footwork is one of the most important aspects of Judo – yet so often we overlook it. That’s why for the past few weeks at my dojo we have just been going over basic footworking drills to ensure people maintain balance while throwing.
After we bow in we have been finding a space on the mat and doing basic solo judo drills such as shadow uchikomi and some visualization sort of stuff. You can find all of the stuff we have been doing at JUDOATHOME.COM
the techniques we have been doing are
– seoi
– osoto
– tao otoshi
– uchimata
– kouchi
– deashi
– and sasae
sorry for my abbreviations, just easier to type 🙂
So this week try at training focus on your footwork….are you swooshing along the mat? Or stomping along?? Are you crossing your feet or have knees bent and are balanced??
If you are interested in any Solo judo drills then check out my Judo at home package at Judoathome.com
Have a great week and ill talk to you soon,
